Is My Window Tint Legal on Fort Hood? Texas Tint Law for Soldiers

If your tint is legal in Texas, it's legal on Fort Hood. The installation follows Texas traffic law, so the numbers that matter are the state's: how much light your front side windows let through, what's on your windshield, and how reflective the film is.

We get this question every week from soldiers who just PCSed in, bought a car from out of state, or want darker tint before summer. Here's the short version, in plain numbers, from a shop that tints cars for Fort Hood families every day.

Texas tint law in plain numbers

Texas only regulates the windshield and the two front side windows on most cars. Everything behind the driver is open, as long as you have both side mirrors. Every number below is measured with the film and the factory glass together, not the film alone.

Windshield: Tint only above the AS-1 line, or the top 5 inches if there's no line. Clear UV film is allowed on the whole windshield. No red, amber or blue.

Front side windows (driver and passenger): At least 25% of light must get through, with no more than 25% reflectance.

Rear side windows: No limit.

Rear window: No limit, as long as the car has an outside mirror on each side. Without both mirrors, the 25% rule applies.

Two details trip people up:

  • 25% means the glass and film together. Factory glass already blocks some light, so the film you put on the front sides needs to be lighter than 25% to land at a legal number. That's why the shade name on the box isn't the reading an officer's meter gives.
  • The law allows a 3% measurement variance on the front side windows, but don't plan around it. A reading under 25% will fail state inspection.

The rules come from Texas Transportation Code §547.613 and the Texas DPS window tinting standards.

If you have a medical condition that requires darker front windows, Texas allows it with a signed statement from a licensed physician or optometrist. Keep it in the car and show it at inspection or a traffic stop. DPS no longer issues exemption certificates; the signed statement is the proof.

What changes when you drive on Fort Hood

The rules don't change on post, but who enforces them does. Federal regulations make the state's traffic laws apply on Army installations under federal jurisdiction (32 CFR 634.25), so Texas tint law is the standard at the gate and on post roads.

What's different is the consequence. Off post, a tint violation is a ticket. On an installation, it can also mean losing your driving privileges on post.

PCSing in with tint from another state

If your car is still registered in another state, Texas tint limits don't apply to it. The statute exempts any motor vehicle not registered in Texas (§547.613(b)(12)), and many soldiers keep their home-state registration.

That changes the day you register the car in Texas. Texas-registered cars go through Texas inspection, and front windows under 25% will fail. If you plan to switch your registration, check your front windows first. A tint meter reading at the shop takes less than a minute.

A very dark windshield or front windows can draw attention at the gate even on out-of-state plates.

What we recommend for Fort Hood drivers

Most of our clients get 33% on the front two windows and 15% on the rest. On most factory glass, 33% film lands right around the legal line, so you pass inspection and the gate without a second look, and the back of the car gets the privacy and heat cut people actually want.

Shade is only half of it. Darkness controls how the car looks; heat rejection depends on the film. We install Autobahn ceramic film in two lines:

  • Black Ceramic: about 60% infrared heat rejection, 99% UV.
  • i3: about 93% infrared heat rejection, 99% UV. About 70% of our customers choose it.

Both carry a lifetime warranty, and the shade you pick doesn't change the price. A legal 33% i3 front window blocks far more heat than a dark, cheap dyed film, so you don't have to go illegal to get a cooler car.

For the windshield, we use a heat-rejecting film that keeps the glass clear, plus an optional strip above the AS-1 line.

Common questions

What's the darkest legal tint in Texas? On the front side windows, 25% light transmission measured with the glass. Behind the driver, any shade is legal as long as you have both side mirrors.

Can MPs check my tint at the gate? Yes. Texas traffic law applies on post, and installations can add their own penalties, including suspending your on-post driving privileges.

My car is registered in another state. Do I have to remove my tint? Not under Texas law. Cars not registered in Texas are exempt from its tint limits. Once you register in Texas, the car has to pass Texas inspection.

Will dark tint fail my Texas inspection? If the front side windows read under 25%, yes. Rear windows don't count against you if you have both side mirrors.

Can I get a medical exemption? Yes, with a signed statement from a licensed physician or optometrist saying darker tint is needed for your health. Keep it in the car.

Can you check my current tint? Yes. Stop by and we'll meter your windows and tell you exactly where you stand. [Matthew: confirm this is free before publishing.]
