When a 2011 Cadillac CTS-V rolled into our shop at Harker Heights Ceramic Coatings, located near Temple, TX, it already had something most cars never get: serious horsepower upgrades and a cam that made the whole building rumble when it fired up.
But despite all the performance under the hood, the carbon fiber hood told a different story.
It had just been freshly painted. Before that, it had been wrapped in blue vinyl, and once the vinyl came off, the black paint underneath showed heavy swirl marks and polishing haze. Carbon fiber panels—especially glossy ones—can look incredible… but they are brutally honest. Every imperfection shows.
This job quickly turned into a great example of why
proper paint correction and polishing matter before installing a ceramic coating.
Fresh paint can be tricky.
Most people assume new paint automatically means perfect paint. In reality, freshly painted panels often have:
On this CTS-V, the black carbon fiber hood had noticeable swirl patterns, especially where the vinyl wrap had been installed previously.
And black paint is unforgiving.
Under the bright lights in our shop near Temple, TX, the swirls looked like spiderwebs across the hood.
Before we could apply any protection, the paint needed a proper paint correction and polishing process.
That’s where the real work started.
We began with our professional polishing process using a combination of tools and compounds designed for serious correction.
For the initial cut we used:
If you’ve never used a wool pad on a rotary or forced-rotation polisher, it can be intimidating. Wool cuts aggressively, which is exactly what we needed to remove the swirl marks left behind from the vinyl and previous polishing.
The goal of the first step isn’t to make the paint perfect.
It’s to remove the major defects.
That means:
Once we completed that step, the hood already looked dramatically better—but under proper lighting you could still see light haze from the cutting process.
That’s normal.
Which brings us to step two.
Once the heavy defects were removed, we refined the paint using:
This step is where the gloss really comes alive.
Perfect Finish is one of my favorite polishing compounds because it does something rare—it cuts lightly but finishes extremely clear.
As we worked across the hood, the difference was obvious.
The paint started to look deeper. Sharper. Almost liquid.
If you look closely at the reflections in the photos, you’ll notice the overhead lighting becomes crisp and distortion-free, which is exactly what we want before applying a coating.
This stage is what we specialize in with our professional paint correction and polishing service.
It’s where experience matters.
Anyone can smear compound on paint. Achieving a consistent, swirl-free finish on black paint is another story.

Carbon fiber hoods—especially aftermarket ones—behave differently than traditional steel panels.
A few things make them tricky:
Some carbon fiber parts have very thin clear coat layers, which means you can’t just attack them aggressively with compound.
Carbon fiber transfers heat differently than metal panels, so we constantly monitor panel temperature while polishing.
The carbon fiber weave underneath the clear coat can amplify imperfections if the polishing isn’t done correctly.
This particular CTS-V hood required careful polishing to maintain clarity without risking the finish.

Once the polishing was complete, we moved on to protection.
We installed one of our eight-year ceramic coatings, which provides long-term durability and protection for the newly corrected paint.
If you’ve never had a ceramic coating before, here’s what it actually does.
A high-quality ceramic coating creates a hardened layer over the clear coat that helps:
It doesn’t make your car scratch-proof. That’s a myth.
But what it does do is preserve the finish we just spent hours perfecting.
For a car like this CTS-V—with deep black paint and carbon fiber—it makes a massive difference in how the paint holds up over time.

After the coating cured, we completed a full exterior detail.
That included:
The transformation was dramatic.
The carbon fiber hood went from hazy and swirl-filled to deep, reflective, and sharp.
Exactly how a high-performance Cadillac should look.
The Cadillac CTS-V from this era is one of the most underrated performance sedans ever built.
Here’s why enthusiasts love them.
The 2011 CTS-V came with a 6.2-liter supercharged LSA V8, producing:
At the time, it was one of the fastest four-door sedans in the world.
Cadillac famously tested the CTS-V at the Nürburgring, where it set a record lap time for a production sedan when it debuted.
Unlike exotic cars, these cars are actually driven.
Many CTS-V owners modify them with:
Which is exactly what this owner had done.
You could hear it the moment the car started.
The cam had a deep idle that echoed through the shop.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is applying a ceramic coating without correcting the paint first.
A coating locks in whatever is underneath.
That means:
If the paint has swirls…
The swirls get locked in.
If the paint has haze…
The haze gets locked in.
That’s why we always recommend polishing before coating whenever defects are present.
It’s the difference between
good results and exceptional results.
After the coating cured, we completed a full exterior detail.
